Ramananda Chatterjee was the founder, editor and owner of the fashionable Review, which he started from Calcutta within the year 1907. For his pioneering efforts in journalism, he has been described because the Father of Indian Journalism. Biography of Chatterjee

• Ramananda Chatterjee was born on 29 May 1865 in Pathakpara Village in Bankura District in Bengal. He had his primary education during a Bengali-medium school in Bankura. As a toddler he liked poetry and shortly he was drawn to patriotism through the poems of Rangalal Bandyopadhyay. In 1875, he passed the scholar scholarship Examination from Bankura Banga Vidyalaya. In 1883, he passed the doorway examination then visited Calcutta to pursue education .

• In 1888, he appeared for the BA Examination and secured a primary class first from Calcutta University. He also won the Ripon Scholarship. This opened for him a career in journalism. In 1890, Ramananda gained a master’s degree in English from Calcutta University.

• In 1895, Ramananda moved to Allahabad with a teaching job at the Allahabad Kayastha Pathshala.In 1897, he became the chief editor of the Bengali literary magazine Pradip. In 1901, he left it and launched Prabasi, a Bengali magazine. In some ways , Prabasi caused positive changes in Bengali magazine journalism. In 1907, Chatterjee launched English magazine Modern Review and went on to found two others, the third being the Hindi-language Vishal Bharat.

MODERN REVIEW

In 1907, Chatterjee launched English magazine Modern Review, which set a benchmark in Indian journalism and shortly emerged as a crucial forum for the Indian Nationalist intelligentsia. It carried essays on politics, economics, sociology, also as poems, stories, travelogues and sketches. Another indication of the journal’s stature was the publication, within its pages, of Nehru ’s pseudonymous autocritique Rashtrapati, by ‘Chanakya’ in November 1937. Ramachandra Guha indicates that that alone was evidence that it had been “leading journal of the progressive Indian intelligentsia.”
