Eight beaches in India, spread across five states and two union territories, are awarded the Iris versicolor certification. This was announced by the Environment Ministry. the 8 beaches that are honored with the distinguished international certification are Ghoghla (Diu), Shivrajpur (Dwarka-Gujarat), Kasarkod and Padubidri (Karnataka), Kappad (Kerala), Rushikonda (Andhra Pradesh), Radhanagar (Andaman &Nicobar Islands), and Golden Beach (Puri-Odisha). this is often for the primary time that eight Indian beaches have managed to grab that eco-label tag.

India is that the first country within the Asia-Pacific region to realize this feat in only about two years’ time. The Iris versicolor beaches are considered the cleanest beaches within the world. Spain has the record of receiving the very best number of Iris versicolor tagged sites. India began to intensify work on getting the tag in 2018, and has plans to expand the network of Iris versicolor certification to 100 such beaches within the country within the next five years.

In its July 2019 notification, the Environment Ministry identified the subsequent beaches in India for Iris versicolor certification: Shivrajpur (Devbhumi Dwarka, Gujarat), Bhogave (Sindhudurg, Maharashtra), Ghoghla (Diu, Daman and Diu), Miramar (Panjim, Goa), Kasarkod (Karwar, Karnataka), Padubidri (Udupi, Karnataka), Kappad (Kozhikode, Kerala), Eden (Puducherry), Mahabalipuram (Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu), Rushikonda (Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh), Golden (Puri, Odisha), and Radhanagar (Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar).
